Is ‘Bar Street’ Doomed?
Bar street in Paphos has long been the focal point for the younger element of the tourist population during the summer in Paphos. However, despite the ongoing work that’s happening in the area tourist numbers are down and for every busy bar there are three empty ones. Whilst factors such as the attempted bombing at Glasgow airport has put some people off flying and therefore tourist trade is down generally across Cyprus the days when ‘Bar Street’ was buzzing seems to be over. Maybe the highways department should be looking at the fact that the constant ‘mess’ and road works in the area for the last 5 years or so has damaged the trade. Cyprus shoots itself in the foot yet again.

Yes! The work did not help, for a couple of years there was mud piled up everywhere so that would have put people off. If you add to that the fact that the Cyprus tourist trade seems to be heading more for villas etc I think we can safely assume ‘bar street’ days are numbered.

My cousin owns a bar on ‘bar street’ and believe me things have been a nightmare! First the street was dug up which really affected trade for him, then the police rode up and down threatening to close any bar playing loud music after 1am and now we don’t have many peoples coming back. Why improve the street then almost shut it down?

I for one hate bar street and all the noise and people. I hope it gets closed down as it is a nuisance. The only people who go there are noisy trouble makers.

For some people this is all they have as a living… my family does not have much money, why should we not make a decent living from tourists? It is hard enough without being made worse by the authorities.

What a shame - Bar Street has many good bars - I especially liked the one opposite the taxi rank on the corner (the name escapes me). It was great in the small hours when the locals gathered there one evening and the men were dancing in the traditional cypriot style - and the DJ earlier that evening was playing and mixing great tunes. Returning back to Paphos again this June - and looking forward to visiting all the bars and clubs again.
